One Fat Rheumatologist

Psst!

I’m going to show you mine even if you don’t want to tell me yours.

It ain’t pretty but the measurement is what it is, the one that counts – Body Composition Testing.

My 1st post for 2012 was about my New Year Health Resolution. I’ve just added another KPI. This rheumatologist needs to convert fat to muscle.

As I write this, after a light dinner of Thai Beef Salad, I really feel like that ice cream sitting in the freezer.

I’m now focussing on the 37.9% fat. Off to have a cup of tea instead.

Dr Irwin Lim is a rheumatologist and a director of BJC Health.
Arthritis requires an integrated approach. We call this, Connected Care.  Contact us.
This blog focuses on arthritis-related diseases, healthcare in general, and our Connected Care philosophy.

Hmmm I think you should keep us posted on your progress. I hate to think what such an assessment would show for those of us with “pred” belly and “camel” hump (much worse than yours) however I am inspired by your willpower at resisting temptation. I think of the ad with the “willpower” working out and getting stronger evertime we use it just like as muscle….and we can all exercise that no matter what our physical state!

I’m proud of you bro – this takes “guts” putting up your results. I’m sure you will hit your KPI and kick butt on the next scan.

    Hi Irwin,
I am glad I blog about sewing not health!!!
When I need a reality check and try and keep it honest I talk about the wrong fabric choice I make or unpicking a mistake not my body composition!!!
Well done for your honesty. I hope it keeps you motivated in improving your health,
    Best wishes, Maryanne.
PS I was keeping it quiet but now feel like I should share. I have committed to 30min of running 5-6 days a week this year. I am just off for my 5th run this week.

Maryanne: your blog is fantastic with the colours & images & clever ideas. I’m glad you’re finding time to get in that exercise. We all juggle & unfortunately, our own health is easy to neglect. In a future post, I’ll detail the “bike torture chamber” I’ve set up at home (I can’t stand running so I have to spin that wheel instead).

Go Irwin! What a brave post..I particularly like the red editing you have done! It is definatley a confronting way for us all to see ourselves. But a great motivator!
    Errol, worst joke ever:)

Good luck Dr Lim!!! Like Jeanette,it would take a cattle prod to get me to do such an assessment currently ,due to the need for high IV steroid dosges this past summer, for RA-associated pericarditis, plus the daily oral prednisone… But it is inspiring to read of others’ efforts and when i get a bit more stable, I look forward to increasing my activity level…

Julie & Jeannette: steroids make it very tough. Exercise, eventhough hard, is really important while on long term steroids given the muscle wasting that occurs. I hope your disease control improves to allow you to do the things we others take for granted.
